Your Mindset Determines Reality

Your mindset determines more about your life than you think. In today’s post, I want to encourage you to pay attention to your thinking. Why? Because much of what you get in on or miss out on in the future is going to be tied to what you think and how you think.

What you think and how you think determines so much about how you live.

You can be focused on what’s true or what feels true, but is actually a lie.

You can be optimistic or pessimistic. Some of us would say, “Neither. I’m realistic.” Fair enough. But who are you letting determine your reality?

You can be focused on things that really matter or have your mind filled with trivial things that just aren’t that important.

Our mindset matters more than our circumstances do.

In Numbers 13, we have the familiar story of the 12 spies. Moses was sending them to Canaan (also known as the Promised Land) to spy out the land God was giving them. Let me repeat that part - “the land God was giving them.” They go inquire of it and they bring back this report:

Numbers 13:30-32 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.”

We act like our circumstance is the main indicator of what we are able to do in our lives. Did you notice the difference in what these two groups of people saw? Absolutely Nothing. The men WHO HAD GONE UP WITH HIM. They all saw the same things, but their minds interpreted what they saw in massively different ways. One was like, “Let’s go for it. We can certainly do it.” The others were like, “We certainly cannot do it.” What was the difference?

Who are the people or what are the inputs that are creating your mindset?

Take a moment and think of the five people you spend the most time with in this season. How would you describe their mindsets? I’m convinced that our thinking is heavily influenced by those we’re around the most. I’m not suggesting you should get rid of every negative person in your life, but I do think you need to be intentional about who you’re mostly surrounding yourself with. Who are 2-3 people with positive mindsets that you should start spending more time around? While part of my calling is to help negative people, I’m not taking my mindset cues from them. I have chosen certain kinds of people whose mindsets I am adopting and so should you.
